Is it time to really start getting excited about SSD as a replacement for hard drives? Whatever your opinion of them, Crucial has just announced a new SSD line that makes the decision to ?go SSD? that much easier.
The Crucial v4 SSD offers up 128GB of storage for $99.99 or 256GB for $189.99. That works out to around $0.74 or $0.78 per gigabyte depending on which you pick, and well below the often talked about $1 per gigabyte barrier. If those prices are still out of reach there?s a 32GB ($49.99) and 64GB ($69.99) v4 if you can live within those storage constraints.
The v4 isn?t one of the latest, fastest generation of SSDs on the market, but it still offers up 230MB/s read speeds and 190MB/s write speeds over a SATA 2 3Gb/s connection using 25nm NAND chips. That?s well beyond the performance of any typical desktop or laptop hard drive, and at a very low price considering this is an SSD.
Crucial is positioning the v4 as a solution for older desktops and laptops that may not have access to a SATA 3 6Gb/s port. But why limit it to old machines? If you?re building a new machine on a budget an SSD as your OS drive is going to make a big difference to the overall performance, and in particular the boot time.
The other good news about the launch of the v4 is it will push prices down even further as other brands try to compete. So even if you aren?t in the market for an SSD right now, they?ll continue to get cheaper over the coming months, and then the next generation of even faster, cheap SSDs will take their place.
