Hunter Cantwell turns down Jaguars offer to become college coach

Former Baltimore and Carolina practice squader Hunter Cantwell turned down a chance to be the Jaguars? third quarterback in favor of becoming an assistant coach at an NAIA college.

Cantwell?s going to work for his old high school coach Perry Thomas at Campbellsville (Ky.) University, quite a departure from the NFL level.

According to a league source, Cantwell surprised the Jaguars by declining their offer to go to camp with a chance to win their third job, and even paid for his own plane ticket home when he didn?t sign.

His decision was predicated by the fact they made no guarantees to keep a third on the 53-man roster behind Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne. After he turned down the chance to compete with Jordan Palmer for the third job, the Jags turned to former Mike Martz-favorite Nathan Enderle.

While that decision seems curious on its face, the lack of any kind of certainty could have prevented him from getting the coaching job, so he went with the sure thing. And for a player who was on the fringes of rosters for three years, apparently the start of a coaching career was worth taking that chance.

PRI Candidate Leads ahead of Mexico's Election

Mexicans go to the polls on Sunday in an election that has appeared all but a foregone conclusion since early in the campaign. Most polls put the Institutional Revolutionary Party?s (PRI) Enrique Pe?a Nieto ahead of his two closest competitors with a double-digit lead, leaving those two?the Party of the Democratic Revolution?s (PRD) Andr?s Manuel L?pez Obrador and the governing National Action Party?s (PAN) Josefina V?zquez Mota?in a tight race for second place. Pe?a Nieto?s poll lead has observers questioning what the return of the PRI, which ruled Mexico for seven decades before 2000, will mean for the country. There are no runoff elections in Mexico; the candidate who wins the largest portion of votes takes office for one six-year term starting in December.

Pe?a Nieto has been the favorite among voters since he announced his candidacy for the PRI in November 2011. Still, he?s experienced slip-ups along the way. During a December book fair he failed to name three books that inspired him and, shortly after that, it surfaced that he had children out of wedlock. More recently, his campaign faced a challenge and protests from the #YoSoy132 student movement. But, as July 1 nears, Pe?a Nieto maintains a comfortable double-digit lead over his competitors.

How his top two rivals will fare is less clear. Since the start of the campaign in March, V?zquez Mota has seen her lead over ex-Mayor of Mexico City L?pez Obrador (better known as AMLO) diminish so that the two now poll neck-and-neck. While they polled within a margin of error over the past week, ADN Pol?tico?s ?Poll of Polls? showed AMLO?s lead over V?zquez Mota widening at the end of campaigning on June 27. This could owe to recent security snafus that potentially hurt the ruling-party candidate?s poll figures while AMLO?s campaign drew nearly half a million spectators in Mexico City on Wednesday.

Moreover, the election outcome could well be shaped by undecided voters, given that polls place them in the double digits. A Grupo Reforma poll reported these voters show a preference for AMLO, leading some to fear a repeat of 2006, when that candidate cried fraud after losing to President Felipe Calder?n by less than 1 percent. Still, these voters could stay home on July 1, reflecting the apathy some have noted during the presidential race. Analysts predict a voter turnout of around 60 percent.

The prospect of Pe?a Nieto?s victory also raises questions about the return of the PRI to Los Pinos. Before the 2000 election of the PAN?s Vicente Fox, the PRI ruled Mexico for more than seven decades with what Reuters called ?an iron first and frequent allegations of corruption.? As such, the PRI?s imminent return has raised some eyebrows. But as The Economist put it: ?If the PRI has managed to win its way back into Mexican hearts, that is partly a verdict on its opponents.? An article in The New York Times writes: ?clean elections and a free press are now taken for granted, but corruption is still rampant, poverty is widespread, economic growth has been slow and an army-led ?war on drugs? has resulted in a mind-boggling death toll.?

The reaction to a PRI return is mixed. Some, such as John M. Ackerman of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, believe a PRI comeback signals a return to old politics. ?The PRI has not cleaned up its act or modernized over the last 12 years,? Ackerman writes for The Los Angeles Times. ?To the contrary, it has deepened its networks of corruption and illegality in the territories it still controls.? Still others, such as the Council on Foreign Relations? Shannon O?Neil argue that ?Mexican democracy has evolved in ways that make a return to wholesale PRI dominance unlikely.? Mexico?s ex-Foreign Minister Jorge Casta?eda similarly argues that ?to fear an authoritarian restoration would be to deny everything that we have all achieved over the last 12 years.? Former New York Times reporter Alan Riding concludes what he believes a likely scenario: ?[I]f elected, Mr. Pe?a Nieto will try to please everyone and will disappoint many. And if he governs only for the PRI?s old pals, he can expect to hear from the Mexican street again.?

Though many may dread the idea, young adults who move back home with mom and dad after a job loss may benefit from it more than they realize. Research published in the Journal of Political Economy finds that returning to the nest can be valuable insurance in a tough labor market, serving as a short-term safety net while also keeping long-term earnings from being stunted by a job loss.

"Intuitively, it makes sense that people move home after an employment shock," said Greg Kaplan, an economics professor at the University of Pennsylvania and the study's author. "We've seen a lot of anecdotal evidence of this during the latest recession, but there hadn't been much hard data on how common it is or what the effects might be. This study demonstrates that the option to move home is potentially very important."

Kaplan used data on nearly 1,500 men born between 1980 and 1984. Surveys tracked the men through their 20s, capturing employment status and living arrangements for each month. By the age of 23, nearly 40 percent of the men in the sample had returned home for at least a month after initially moving away from home. Those who stopped working were 63 percent more likely to back move home in the following three months, compared to those who continued to work. Constraints of the survey data forced Kaplan to limit his sample to men who did not go to college, but an additional dataset suggests that the phenomenon applies to the broader population. "When we look at aggregate state-level data we see a similar pattern," Kaplan said. "As a state's unemployment level increases, so do co-residency rates."

The data show an important long-term advantage to moving home after a job loss. Take for example an average person in Kaplan's sample who loses his job at the age of 20. People in that situation had earnings at age 26 that were 25 percent lower than someone who did not lose a job. However, this long-term effect was concentrated almost entirely among youths who did not live with their parents and did not return home after their job loss. Those who lost a job and did move back home had essentially the same earnings in later years as people who had never lost a job.

Why does living with mom and dad serve as a buffer from the negative earnings effect? Kaplan believes it's because those living at home can be choosier when looking for a new job. They have the option to wait for a job that offers higher future earning potential. "Jobs with higher growth potential may be harder to find," Kaplan said. "And they often involve low earnings in the short run but higher earnings in the future?an internship for example. If you're living at home, you might be able to wait for these better opportunities."

But if you're on your own and need to pay rent, you need a decent-paying job quickly. Easier-to-find jobs?like food service or simple labor?have lower long-term growth potential. As a result people who are pushed into those jobs will have lower earnings down the line compared to those who can live at home and wait it out.

To test this idea, Kaplan used his real-world data to construct a theoretical model that simulates labor market choices. "In the model, I can do counterfactual experiments," he said. "I can take away the option to move home and see how important it is in different circumstances."

Using his data, Kaplan modeled how a 23-year-old might evaluate job offers in a world where the option to move home was turned on or off. He created two types of hypothetical jobs. "Safe" jobs come around often, but have lower potential for future earnings. "Risky" jobs are rarer, but have higher future earnings.

According to the model, there would be as many as 15 percent fewer youths working in risky, high-growth jobs if the option to move home is removed entirely, resulting in lower earnings over the long term. The model results echo the long-term income loss found in the real-world data and provide good evidence that the pattern is linked to constrained job choices for those who may be unable to move home.

Turkey seeks NATO action over Syria jet downing

Reports are surfacing that Syria may have shot down a Turkish fighter jet over Syrian waters in the Mediterranean Sea. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

Turkey called for an extraordinary meeting of NATO on Sunday after one of its planes was shot down by Syria in international airspace ? an incident condemned by Britain as ?outrageous?.

Turkey insisted the plane, which had mistakenly strayed into Syrian territory, was not on a spying mission, and filed an official protest note to Damascus.

State-run TRT television reported that Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu had called the meeting for Tuesday over article 4 of the NATO charter concerning Friday's incident.

?

The article says member countries "will consult together whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the parties is threatened."

The wreckage of the plane was discovered in the Mediterranean on Sunday at a depth of 3,281 feet, TRT reported. The pilots still have not been accounted for.

Nato spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said the North Atlantic Council, the principal political decision-making body within the military alliance, would meet in Brussels on Tuesday to discuss the incident.

"Turkey has requested consultations under Article 4 of Nato?s founding Washington Treaty,? she told Reuters.

Britain's Foreign Secretary William Hague said Sunday that he was "gravely concerned by the Syrian regime's action in shooting down" the plane, and said Davutoglu had told him no warning was given.

Turkey: Syria's downing of military jet cannot be ignored

"This outrageous act underlines how far beyond accepted behavior the Syrian regime has put itself and I condemn it wholeheartedly," Hague said in a statement. "The Assad regime should not make the mistake of believing that it can act with impunity. It will be held to account for its behavior. The UK stands ready to pursue robust action at the United Nations Security Council."

Hague met last week with U.N and Arab League special envoy Kofi Annan for talks on plans for an international summit, while British officials discussed the issue in Geneva on Saturday with members of Annan's team.

"This deplorable incident underlines the urgent need to find a solution to the current crisis in Syria in order to bring an end to the violence and to achieve a genuine political transition," Hague said.

Davutoglu said earlier Sunday that the jet was downed in "international airspace" after it mistakenly strayed into Syria, but the plane was not on a spying mission. He said the plane had entered Syria on Friday, but quickly left when warned by Turkey.

The plane had no "covert mission related to Syria," Davutoglu said, adding that it was purely on a training flight to test Turkey's radar capabilities.

Davutoglu said the plane was shot down one mile inside the airspace several minutes after it left Syria.

Syria on Saturday insisted the shooting was "not an attack," and that the plane had violated its airspace.

Microsoft Windows 8 Surface Tablets: Big Hardware Play

After days of speculation about a Microsoft-crafted Windows 8 tablet, the software giant delivered the goods Monday night in Los Angeles, in the form of Surface--one tablet for Windows 8 RT running on NVidia's ARM processor, and one for Windows 8 Pro, running on Intel's Ivy Bridge (using the i5 core). Despite rampant speculation, the announcement still felt a little like a surprise.

The Surface for Windows 8 RT weighs 676 grams and is 9.3 mm thick. By way of comparison, the iPad weighs 652 grams and measures 9.4 mm thick. Using a 10.6-inch ClearType HD display, this Microsoft tablet includes USB 2.0, Micro HD, and microSD options for connectivity. The 2x2 MIMO antennas give it the strongest WiFi capability of any tablet, according to Microsoft's Windows chief Steve Sinofsky.

The Surface for Windows 8 Pro is heavier, at 903 grams, and thicker at 13.5 mm. It also includes the 10.6-inch ClearType display, but Microsoft's spec sheets say it is "Full HD." It includes USB 3.0 along with microSD, and a Mini DisplayPort Video--so users can send video to a full screen or other compatible display.

Microsoft spent a great deal of time talking about the design of Surface, with its VaporMG case. Microsoft claims the tablet is scratch and wear resistant, and designed to be both sturdy and light. The display uses Corning's Gorilla Glass. The device also includes a built-in kickstand, made with the same material and integrated so that it doesn't stick out or add very much to the Surface's weight (it is .7 mm thick and fits into the device). Microsoft is also including a magnetic cover. But this cover doesn't just snap on and sit there--its underside is actually a touch keyboard, with a track pad and Metro user interface keys. The cover is 3 mm thick.

Microsoft provided a few other details: The camera is angled at 22 degrees, which Sinofsky said lets everyone at a table (presumably gathered around the tablet) be in the frame. And of course, the Surface serves as a good Skype device, Sinofsky pointed out. The Surface includes dual array microphones and speakers.

The Windows 8 Pro version includes pen input. Because the screen is optically bonded, it feels as if you're actually writing on it, said Microsoft VP Michael Angiulo. The Surface includes what Angiulo called Palm Lock, so that the image doesn't move while you're writing on it. The writing input is sampled at 600 dpi, for sub pixel accuracy and smoothness, Angiulo said.

Microsoft didn't give shipment dates or pricing, but said the Windows RT version would ship around the time when Windows 8 is made available, and the Pro model will come three months later.

The RT version comes in 32 GB and 64 GB models, and will be priced comparably to other consumer tablets. The Windows Pro version will come in 64 GB and 128 GB versions and will be priced like ultrabooks. Both will be available via the Microsoft physical stores, and online.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? Arizona's Konner Wade got payback, and then some, against UCLA on Sunday night.

Wade pitched his first career shutout, limiting the Bruins to five singles in a 4-0 victory that gave the Wildcats control of Bracket 1 at the College World Series.

Two months ago, the Bruins had knocked the sophomore out of a Pac-12 game after three innings and dealt him the first loss of his career.

"I got hit pretty hard the last time I pitched against them, and I knew they took advantage of the mistakes I made that game," Wade said. "I was really eager for the opportunity to throw against them today. I was going to try to keep the ball down in the zone, and I let my movement take care of it."

Safe to say, Sunday's game was more important than Wade's 15-3 loss in Tucson, Ariz., back in April.

This win gave the Wildcats (45-17) three days off and put them one victory away from the best-of-three finals, in which they would play for their fourth national championship and first since 1986.

Second-seeded UCLA (48-15), which lost for the first time in 11 games, will play Florida State in an elimination game on Tuesday.

"It's all about taking blows at the College World Series," Bruins coach John Savage said. "It's not a dagger. It's a blow. We'll move on and we'll be ready to play on Tuesday night."

Wade (10-3) outdueled Nick Vander Tuig (10-4), throwing his second straight complete game and fifth of the season. It was Arizona's sixth shutout in 62 CWS games and its first since Craig Lefferts blanked Michigan in 1980.

"He pitched as well as anybody we've seen all year," Savage said.

Wade walked one and struck out four in a 109-pitch outing in which he threw 79 strikes.

"It's an understatement for me to say he was outstanding. He was pretty doggone good," Arizona coach Andy Lopez said. "I thought it was a great matchup. We were fortunate enough to get one inning where we got some offense, and when you have two good clubs getting together like that, that was the difference."

The Wildcats' runs came on five straight hits off Vander Tuig in the fourth.

Johnny Field, who had the game-winning double in Friday's 4-3, 12-inning win over Florida State, singled with one out for Arizona's first hit. Alex Mejia and Robert Refsnyder reached to load the bases before Seth Mejias-Brean drove in the first two runs with a hit into right-center. Brown followed with a two-RBI double.

"He left some balls up there that one inning and we took advantage of it and put some good swings on the ball," Brown said. "I tip my hat to their starting pitcher. He shut us down except for that inning."

Wade ran into trouble just once.

UCLA went three up, three down in the first four innings before breaking through after two outs in the fifth. Pat Valaika, Cody Regis and Kevin Kramer hit consecutive singles to load the bases, but Kevin Williams flied out to end the inning.

"Keep my composure, that's what I tried to do," Wade said.

Savage said Wade completely took the Bruins out of their offensive rhythm. UCLA was shut out once before this season, at Oregon State in April, but had outscored opponents 42-10 in six previous NCAA tournament games.

"We weren't ourselves," Savage said, "but it had a lot to do with (Wade). We were uncharacteristically impatient. That's what good pitchers do. At the end of the day I thought he really made pitch after pitch. The times we did get something going, there were two outs."

Vander Tuig allowed six hits, walked one and struck out eight in 6 1-3 innings. The four runs in the fourth were the most Vander Tuig had surrendered in an inning this season.

Arizona has won 15 of 17 games and has four shutouts this season.

"We're making big pitches when we have to right now," Lopez said. "We're playing good baseball."
