If you?re a fan of physical keyboards, then the smartphone market doesn?t leave you a ton of great options.

Arriving on Sprint just this past Sunday, the Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE is one of the few options out there. A follow-up to the Photon 4G from last year, this year?s model runs on Sprint?s band new LTE network (where available).

[More from Mashable: How to Ditch Your Landline]

Available on the carrier for $199.99 with a new two-year contract, the phone is competing against the similarly priced HTC EVO 4G LTE, and the Samsung Galaxy S III on Sprint for your dollars. So is it worth it?

Design

The phone has a 4.3-inch qHD (960 x 540 pixel) LCD display, which puts it a cut below some of its competition rocking full HD displays. While you?ll definitely notice a difference when looking at the phone against a higher-resolution display, it?s likely not noticeable enough it will be a problem, perhaps due in part to Motorola?s ColorBoost technology.

ColorBoost makes colors pop on the phone, and help make up for where the screen might be lacking in the resolution department. It?s still not a high-definition display, but it?s not as bad looking as some other qHD options out there.

A volume rocker and dedicated camera shutter bottom live on the left side of the device; on the right you have exposed microUSB and HDMI ports. The power button is dead center on top, with a headphone jack to the left.

Since the Photon Q 4G LTE has a QWERTY keyboard built in, it?s a little thicker than most other Android phones out there. While definitely bulkier than Motorola?s svelte Droid RAZR, the handset isn?t a ton thicker than an iPhone, and still can be easily slipped into a pocket.

Physical Keyboards Are Nice

The Photon Q 4G LTE uses a keyboard exceptionally similar to Motorola?s Droid 4. While most of the physical keyboards I?ve had a chance to play with in recent years have been pretty cramped ?- to the point that they were impossible to type on ?- the raised keys on the Photon?s large keyboard made typing on it comfortable, and I daresay preferable to using the virtual keyboard.

Much like touchscreen-only smartphones, the Photon Q has a virtual keyboard you can use to type messages. When typing longer messages, however, I found myself sliding out the keyboard to type rather than using the virtual keys on the screen a lot more than I thought I would.

The keys are backlit, making them easy to see in dark situations. You can also adjust the brightness of the key?s backlight to meet your own personal needs, or set it to adjust based on the ambient light available in the room you?re in.

The power button for the phone is awkwardly located on the top center of the handset right where the side of your hand will go while typing. The peculiar placement meant some of my overly enthusiastic typing sessions ended in me turning the screen off, and in some cases starting the process to turn the phone off entirely.

For me personally, it would have been better for Motorola to move the power button to the top right off the device, just to keep it out of the way of hands while using the physical keyboard. If you?re using the phone every day, however, it?s something you could likely adjust to over time.

Software

The Photon Q 4G LTE comes running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with Motorola?s Application Platform -- its new name for MotoBlur ?- on top of it.

In a lot of ways the phone feels like it?s running stock Android ?- similar to Samsung?s Galaxy Nexus ?- perhaps in part due to Google?s acquisition of the company, with a few small differences.

Smart Actions help new Android and novice Android owners automate how the phone operates throughout the day -- for instance, always connecting to Wi-Fi when you get to work -? to optimize the phone?s performance.

The phone comes with two home screens, but you can add up to five more with customized apps and widgets.

Phone nerds will appreciates that the phone has an unlocked bootloader, so you can really customize the phone if you?re so inclined.

Camera

The Photon Q has an 8-megapixel built-in camera that takes good, but certainly not great pictures. Where companies like HTC have dramatically improved the cameras in their phones over the past year ?- the HTC EVO 4G on Sprint takes fantastic pictures -- Motorola has kept its cameras relatively un-upgraded, and it shows.

The camera performed poorly in low-light situations, and not all that better in brightly lit locations where you would presume it would work well. Colors were muted, and photos were often blurry and lacked the crispness and clarity of pictures taken from other cameras, overall resulting in a pretty disappointing performance.

Conclusion

The main draw of the Photon Q 4G LTE is obviously going to be its keyboard. The phone is priced to compete with a number of other more powerful smartphones on the market, and a full $50 over the iPhone on Sprint.

If a keyboard is a necessity for you, then we can definitely recommend the Photon Q as a solid option and a great transition device for BlackBerry lovers looking to make the jump to Android.

If you don?t see yourself using the keyboard, however, then you?d be better served to pick up another Android device on the carrier such as the HTC EVO 4G LTE, or Samsung Galaxy S III.

Gold hits 4-month high on hopes for economic help

The price of gold hit at a four-month high Thursday as lackluster manufacturing in China raised expectations that government leaders will take more action to help the world's second-largest economy.

Gold for December delivery rose $32.30, or 2 percent, Thursday to end at $1,672.80 per ounce. That's the highest level since April.

HSBC Corp.'s preliminary purchasing managers index showed China's manufacturing fell to a nine-month low in August. Export orders fell at the fastest rate in three years.

The report came a day after minutes from a Federal Reserve meeting were released suggesting that the central bank may be ready to offer more help for the U.S. economy.

Slower growth has raised investor hopes that the U.S., China and Europe will try to invigorate their economies. That has increased interest in gold, in part because it is used as a hedge against inflation.

Phillip Streible, a senior commodities broker at RJ O'Brien, said more investors are selling stocks and buying riskier assets, such as metals. He predicted that gold could approach $1,700 per ounce but that traders would re-evaluate holdings at that point without a Federal Reserve plan in place.

December silver increased 90.1 cents, or 3 percent, to finish at $30.542 per ounce, and September copper rose 3.8 cents to $3.4925 per pound.

Platinum and palladium prices rose on worries that labor disputes may disrupt supplies from South African mines. Both are among metals included in a complex referred to as platinum group metals, which are used in everything from automobile catalytic converters to jewelry.

Thirty-four striking miners were killed by police last week when a wage dispute turned violent at the Lonmin PLC mine near Johannesburg. Workers have made demands for higher wages to managers of at least two other mines in South Africa.

October platinum increased $28.40 to finish at $1,554.90 per ounce, and September palladium jumped $27.85, or 4.4 percent, to $656.60 per ounce.

Other commodity prices were mixed.

Benchmark oil fell 99 cents to end at $96.27 per barrel, heating oil rose 0.43 cent to $3.133 per gallon, gasoline gained 1.16 cents to $3.1158 per gallon and natural gas dropped 2.4 cents to $2.802 per 1,000 cubic feet.

In agricultural contracts, December wheat dropped 22.25 cents to finish at $8.9475 per bushel, December corn fell 20 cents to $8.1475 per bushel and November soybeans decreased 12.75 cents to $17.15 per bushel.

DuPont: 10 Percent of its U.S. Hires through 2013 will be Veterans

At a Joining Forces Event Hosted by the U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama, DuPont Commits Veterans will Account for at Least 10 Percent of All U.S. Hires through 2013

Jacksonville, Fla. (PRWEB) August 22, 2012

DuPont was proud to participate with the First Lady in a Joining Forces event to highlight the importance of hiring U.S. military veterans. ?Our relationship with the U.S. government stretches back nearly to the birth of our nation. As the inventor of DuPont? Kevlar? and Nomex? fibers, which are utilized every day to keep U.S. troops safe while in harm?s way, we understand the sacrifice, commitment and service to America that military service represents,? said DuPont Senior Vice President of Human Resources Benito Cachinero-S?nchez. ?We also recognize the valuable experience our veterans bring to businesses and how their skills translate into leadership and innovation for companies like DuPont.?

DuPont has an active focus on hiring veterans and an employee Veteran's Network to assist veterans as they integrate into DuPont.

?Our commitment is to ensure that at least 10 percent of all U.S. hires through 2013 are veterans and we look forward to more joining our ranks,? said Cachinero-S?nchez.

?It was a privilege for DuPont to be a part of the Joining Forces ceremony at the Naval Station Mayport yesterday with the First Lady, and we thank her for her tireless commitment to bring attention, focus and energy to the importance of the private sector hiring veterans,? he added.

?This is exactly what we hoped for when the First Lady and Dr. Jill Biden launched Joining Forces last year ? major companies stepping up and making a commitment to employ America?s veterans. We?re appreciative of their impactful efforts and look forward to working with DuPont as we all strive to serve our nation?s veterans as well as they have served us,? said Navy Captain Brad Cooper, executive director of Joining Forces.

Jason Irwin, a U.S. Army veteran who served in Iraq and is a DuPont employee, attended the event and said, "I am proud to have served my country and now be part of DuPont which has a strong tradition of supporting the United States military. I look forward to working with the DuPont Veterans Network to play a key role in helping our new veteran hires achieve success in their DuPont careers.?

Collective motion in schools of fish can evolve as finely tuned defense against attack from predators: Virtual fish simulation

ScienceDaily (Aug. 23, 2012) ? A video game designed for predatory fish might have unraveled some lingering evolutionary questions about group formation and movement in animals, according to new research that took a unique approach to observing interactions between real and simulated animals.

Princeton University researchers report in the journal Science some of the strongest direct evidence that collective motion in animal groups such as schools of fish can evolve as a finely tuned defense against attack from predators. This dynamic has been suggested by other research, but the many variables that can drive group movement have made it difficult to observe a direct link to self-defense, explained senior researcher Iain Couzin, an assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at Princeton who studies collective animal behavior.

Couzin and his colleagues developed an evolvable simulation of small prey that allowed the researchers to observe how group formation and movement alone protect against predatory attack. Couzin developed and conducted the study at Princeton with two former postdoctoral researchers from his lab, first author Christos Ioannou, now a research fellow at the University of Bristol, and Vishwesha Guttal, now an assistant professor of ecological sciences at the Indian Institute of Science.

The researchers projected the simulated prey -- which appeared as small reddish dots -- onto one side of a tank containing the famously ravenous bluegill sunfish. The prey interacted spontaneously with one another based on encoded behavior traits, and the researchers documented in the prey the resulting individual behaviors and group formations. In the end, the bluegills were most likely to avoid attacking simulated prey that had formed coordinated and mobile groups.

These results show that group formation itself can dissuade a predator, even if the prey -- as in the simulation -- are completely unaware of the danger, the researchers report. This suggests that the specific configuration of animal groups is an evolved defense in its own right, Couzin explained. The ideal configurations exhibited by the simulated prey mirror those of many animal groups, wherein individuals follow cues from their near-neighbors to coordinate collective movement.

"This sort of hybrid virtual approach has given us a way of tapping into these long-lasting questions that have really evaded standard analysis for decades," Couzin said.

"To conduct this type of study is very intensive in terms of statistics and creating control models of what predators would have done, given the prey that were available to them in that particular situation at that time and compare that to the behavior of the real behavior," Couzin said. "And that's one of the reasons why these studies have been so difficult in the past using classic experimental means."

An important aspect of the simulation is that it let the researchers control the behavior of individual prey, Couzin said. In nature, animals can respond to a predator in different and unpredictable ways -- animals might react as the predator approaches or after the initial attack. In addition, group cohesion depends on the number of animals assembled and environmental factors such as terrain.

For the Princeton study, the researchers encoded each individual prey with various strengths of three traits -- a tendency to be attracted to, swim in the same direction as, or ignore nearby individuals. Thus, individual prey would either swim alone, group together, or follow other prey, or exhibit a combination of traits.

Julia Parrish, a University of Washington professor of aquatic and fishery sciences, said that the level of control Couzin and his colleagues had over prey behavior, and testing the predator's reaction to that behavior, sets their experiment apart from others based on real and simulated animal interactions. Parrish is familiar with the Princeton study, but had no role in it.

"The beauty of this experiment is that the researchers systematically vary the rules that the individual simulated prey play by, which dictates the structure of the resulting group," Parrish said. "They're like the little man behind the curtain moving three dials up and down -- attraction, repulsion and alignment. Then they say, 'Okay, bluegills, give it your best shot. How good are you at attacking prey based on how we set the rules?'"

This approach resulted in a "significant first step" toward a metric that can quantify how individual behaviors influence the safety of the group during a predator attack, Parrish said.

"This experiment makes some very specific predictions about what's a good configuration and what's not a good configuration, and gives some insight into what the rules of aggregation might be," she said.

"We don't know the rules prey use," Parrish said. "We can watch them, we can track them and infer what the rules are, but we don't actually know what they are. What this study did is bypass that messiness and make up the prey then see what a real predator does. That simplification is the innovation."

Once the simulation began the individual prey would swim and form groups spontaneously. Each trial consisted of 16 prey and one bluegill predator. Only the first attack by each bluegill was recorded. A new bluegill was put in the tank after the researchers restarted the simulation and the prey began moving and interacting with each other.

"Effectively, the bluegills were playing an immersive video game in which they hunted," Couzin said.

"By evolving the prey groupings, the game becomes harder and harder for the predators, as when a video game adapts to the strategy employed by the players," he said. "In a similar way, our prey 'evolved' to the mode of hunting that the bluegills exhibited, adapting better strategies that allowed them to evade hunting more effectively."

Naturally, the researchers found that simulated prey that formed groups "survived" better than those that swam alone. But individuals in groups also needed to strike a balance of closeness and coordinated movement to keep the bluegills at bay, the researchers reported.

Large groups that did not move much eventually fell victim to attacks in "high-risk" areas of the projected space in which bluegills preferentially attacked. Yet when groups of prey moved with coordination, they passed through these high-risk areas too quickly for each individual bluegill to make its attack.

Although the project used bluegills, Parrish said, the catalog of formation possibilities the researchers developed leave room to understand how individual behavior and movement influences other predators such as tuna, which target large groups.

"We could systematically go through all the combinations this study presents and see what a predator actually responds to," Parrish said.
